Genetically determined NLRP3 inflammasome activation associates with systemic inflammation and cardiovascular mortality

European Heart Journalhttps://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehab107

What inspired your research and what did it cover?

Inflammation plays a prominent role in atherosclerosis, and the inflammasome is an essential catalyst for inflammation processes in the body. However, it was not yet clear whether inflammation was a cause or consequence of atherosclerosis. For the first time, we were able to demonstrate that a genetic predisposition to increased inflammation is indeed associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

Which aspect(s) of your research work are you particularly excited about?

That is difficult to pinpoint. Some work, I enjoy because the guiding question or applied methodology is particularly interesting. Other work, because it creates a greater impact by resonating particularly well with the scientific community or wider public.

Looking at the potential of your findings, what difference can they make?

In my research work, I concentrated on the genetic and biochemical risk factors for cardiovascular illnesses, worked on an improved risk stratification, and developed new algorithms. All these contribute to personalized medicine through improved patient management and ultimately better quality of life for patients. In addition, the developed prediction tools are of significant interest to diagnostic service providers such as SYNLAB.
