1. Have you always wanted to be a scientist?
I always loved science and wanted to work in the field of biology, but my true passion for genetics and the laboratory came almost 10 years after graduation. When a laboratory manager helped me in a difficult personal situation, I realized that, like him, I wanted to help people.
2. What is the most rewarding part of being a scientist for you?
I enjoy making genetics easy for people, whether they are patients, doctors, or colleagues.
3. What do you think that companies like SYNLAB can do to encourage more girls and women to seek careers in areas of life sciences?
Flexibility. Women need flexibility because in addition to work they must manage a family, children, and their home. Asking a woman to give these things up is not natural, so companies like SYNLAB should give employees the opportunity to organize a functioning work-life balance – even when they are scientists working for a big company.
4. What benefits did you as a scientist get from working in SYNLAB?
SYNLAB gave me confidence as well as flexibility. Since the very first day, my colleagues have involved me in projects bigger than me, allowing me to grow professionally. Not only in genetics but also in other fields, such as management.
5. Even though we see more women pursuing careers in the life sciences area, we still have a long way to go based on the UNESCO statistics. What would you tell a female high school graduate considering studies in life sciences?
Life sciences will give you the opportunity to learn and discover amazing things daily: the fantastic laws of nature, our delicate planet Earth, our perfect cells and bodies, or whatever you will study. You do not have to choose between being a woman and being a scientist; you can be a woman working in science. You can have it all.
